A Defense Attorney Who Knows the Bench

Chris Easthope brings a perspective that very few criminal defense attorneys can offer, that of a former judge. After serving on the 15th District Court bench from 2009 to 2015, Chris returned to private practice armed with a firsthand understanding of how Michigan’s courts operate, what judges look for, and where defenses succeed or fail. That experience now works entirely in your favor.
His legal career spans more than 30 years of Michigan law, beginning in private practice, expanding through public service, and deepening through seven years presiding over thousands of criminal and traffic cases, felony preliminary exams, and specialty court dockets. Chris personally handles every client and every case, ensuring that your defense receives the full benefit of his experience and attention.
Judicial Career

Chris was elected as a judge of the 15th District Court, serving Washtenaw County, in 2008 and served on the bench from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2015. During his seven years as a judge, he presided over criminal and traffic cases, including felony preliminary examinations and Minor in Possession (MIP) dockets. His docket included jury and bench trials, thousands of pretrial hearings, and two specialty courts he founded himself:
- Washtenaw County Veterans’ Treatment Court: Founded in October 2012 to address the unique legal and rehabilitative needs of veterans involved in the criminal justice system
- Washtenaw County Mental Health Treatment Court: Established in July 2014 to provide specialized services and alternatives for individuals with serious mental illness
These courts represented a commitment to justice that went beyond punishment, recognizing that the legal system, at its best, creates paths to recovery and stability.
Legal Career Before the Bench
Prior to his election as judge, Chris served as an attorney at Roberts & Freatman law firm and also operated his own private practice, representing clients in criminal and civil matters throughout Michigan. This foundation in hands-on legal representation gives him a complete perspective on the criminal justice process from every angle.
Public Service
Before becoming a judge, Chris devoted nearly a decade to public service as an elected member of the Ann Arbor City Council, where he ultimately served as Mayor Pro Tem from 2000 to 2008.
That commitment to community continues today. As Head JV Football Coach at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, Chris mentors young athletes both on and off the field, a reminder that his investment in Ann Arbor has never been limited to the courtroom.
